LP The Cartridge Man HI-Fi News Analogue Test. LP Test disc for fine and precise turntable set-up. Recorded on high-quality 180g vinyl
In response to the lack of new turntable tuning test records and the public's demand for a definitive means of setting up their analogue set-up, The Cartridge Man, building on the success of its previous test record, has produced an all-new test record.
Recorded on audiophile-quality 180g vinyl, this new version also includes a full set of templates and an additional test track containing a frequency sweep.

DESCRIPTION
The HiFi News Test LP is indispensable for all analogue systems. It contains excellent tools on both sides and is the best investment you can make. Its tracks allow control of all essential aspects, from channel balance to azimuth, with an ease of use that allows anyone from laymen to record collectors to get the best out of their turntable.
INSTRUCTIONS
SIDE ONE
Track 1
Channel identification: voice on the left channel and then on the right channel
The inversion of left and right channels is one of the most common mistakes in an analogue system. If the channels are inverted, they suffer in imaging, depth and dynamic range. This track ensures basic test coverage for a high-performance system.
Track 2
Phasing: alternating ‘in phase’ and ‘out of phase’ voices
Reversing cartridge leads is the second most common mistake made in an analogue rig. Incorrect phase wiring on the cartridge destroys imaging, space, depth, bass extension and overall system gain. This trace provides easily audible signals to highlight phase inaccuracies.
Track 3, 4, 5
Channel Balance: -20db pink noise test
These three tracks provide weighted random mid-range noise to ensure that the tonal balance is set correctly. When listening, neither the left nor the right speaker should be louder. Track 3 is pink noise in both channels, track 4 is left-only and track 5 is right-only. Check these tracks before switching to the Bias tracks.
Track 6, 7, 8
Polarisation setting: tone at 300Hz, both channels at + 12 dB, + 14 dB, + 16 dB, respectively
These tracks are used to set the anti-skate. If you hear the 300Hz test tone distorting or buzzing on both channels, you need to adjust the anti-skate function. Each subsequent track is more difficult for the arm and cartridge; increasing the tracking force towards the top of the cartridge's recommended range will help to resolve these tracks correctly.
Track 9
Bias setting: 300Hz tone, both channels + 18dB
This track is the single most difficult for a cartridge to track cleanly. Although only 2dB higher than track 8, this track is perhaps the most famous of the four, as only the best gear and alignments can pass unscathed. For those with more modest equipment, the results of this track should be taken with a grain of salt.
SIDE TWO
Track 1, 4, 8
Tracking capability: 300Hz tone, both channels + 15dB
These three tracks contain identical information, allowing you to test the cartridge's tracking consistency across the entire record surface. These tracks - outer, middle and centre - are designed to be used together, ensuring that the cartridge sounds the same in all three positions. These tracks are also great for controlling anti-skate force and tracking settings. Consistency is the key with these three tracks; if all three are correct, most records should sound great.
Track 2 + 3
Lateral and vertical resonance testing on cartridge and arm
These two tracks are used to test the resonance frequency or combination of arm and cartridge in both the vertical and horizontal domains. These traces offer both a visual and auditory indication of the resonance frequency; the stylus will ‘wobble’ and the test tone will warp. A resonance frequency between 8 - 15Hz is ideal.
Track 5
Cartridge alignment test: 300Hz, both channels + 6dB
Ideal playback occurs when the stylus is exactly perpendicular to the record, this track tests the cartridge's azimuth adjustment. When this track is played in stereo, there will be an identical output from both speakers, however, when the output is switched to mono, both tracks should cancel each other out for, ideally, no output.
Track 6
Residual system noise test
There is nothing in this groove, this track is completely unmodulated. Played at normal listening levels, the stylus highlights any noise created by the analogue system; worn bearing, noisy motor or poor vibration control. Playback of this track should be completely silent.
Track 7
Full-range frequency system control: both channels, 20Hz -20KHz, Sweep
This track will give your system a real workout as the deepest bass swells to maximums. Listen carefully to the resonance within the system and in the room.
