Turntable mats have always been a big discussion on how they affect sound. The interaction between the record and the surface can easily be monitored by the supersensitivity of a good pick-up cartridge. Common felt mats give a smooth contact between the record and the platter, but has the disadvantage with static electricity. This means that felt mats often collect a lot of dust, which can then be transferred to the disc. The damping capacity is also very limited, which can be a problem with metal platters. Thick rubber mats over-mould the disc and have an isolating effect that leaves static on the disc and the result is audible noise. Leather and cork are two different but very interesting options for improving sound quality. They dampen resonances more effectively than felt, keep dust out and also have a certain contact capacity to prevent static electricity from forming. What is best depends on the taste and design of the actual cymbal. A very convenient way to improve sound and have less noise from static and dust. You can hear a difference!
