From 1932 to the end of the 1940s, the period encompassing the recordings on Cab Calloway's eponymous album, the American singer, musician and actor had an excellent swing orchestra. For his part, Calloway put in his voice with which he managed to convey boundless magic, exuberance and enthusiasm. His orchestra in the 1930s and 1940s included many well-known names in jazz: on several occasions, Milt Hinton, Danny Barker and Cozy Cole were in his rhythm section. The reeds included the great Chu Berry and Ben Webster. Dizzy Gillespie was also part of this great band, which at times became a veritable studio laboratory for the development of what would later be called bop. The main attraction, however, was always Cab Calloway: perfect showman, singer and entertainer. Most of the public did not even know that some of his bandmates were candidates for the Jazz Hall Of Fame. And that was as it should be as the task of the musicians in the orchestra was to provide the appropriate musical support for the man who was called 'King of the Hipsters', and this they did, flawlessly. Barry Ulanov was right who, in the January 1943 Metronome magazine, noted that they were an extraordinary band in every respect, acclaimed for their 'clean music, jazzy licks and brilliant showmanship'.
