‘Aladdin Sane was on the one hand an extension of Ziggy. On the other hand, it was more subjective, Aladdin Sane was my idea of rock ‘n’ roll America. I was involved in that big concert circuit and I didn't like it very much. So inevitably my writing reflected the kind of schizophrenia I was going through. I wanted to be on stage singing my songs, but at the same time I didn't want to be on those buses with all those strange people. Since I am basically a quiet person it was hard to come to terms with it. So Aladdin Sane was split in half.’ David Bowie
‘For this project he was accompanied by the musical group The Spiders From Mars. The title is basically a play on words: ‘aladdin sane’ becomes ‘A lad insane’. This note is important in order to review and understand the album cover.’
