"'Rumors' was and still is a record that is both timeless and topical. It came out in 1977, when punk was raging in England. On the other side of the ocean, on the west coast of the United States, however, they were thinking of something quite different and gave birth to what, in fact, remains the peak of the Californian sound in its most pop sense. Paradoxically, Fleetwood Mac come from a completely different place than the classic names of the west coast sound: their leader, Mick Fleetwood is English and comes from the London rock-blues scene. [...] When the group entered the studio in 1976, the two couples were in crisis: sparks flew during the recording, and several lyrics ('Dreams', 'Go your own way') seemed to be inspired by personal contrasts, as in the classic stereotype of the artist who suffers and creates. The result, however, is a record of fresh, melodic pop, with a rock foundation in the (unobtrusive) use of guitar and the sustained rhythmic structure of the songs. A Californian record, not only for the recording location (San Francisco), but for the melodic impasto of the vocals, for the brightness of the melodies. A record, which on closer inspection, has little to do with Jackson Browne or the Eagles, but has the same roots, not just territorial ones."
