"It is the year of grace 1979, and Frank Zappa makes what, at least according to many critics, can be considered Zappa's masterpiece par excellence, 'Sheik Yerbouti' (moreover, in the original version, it is also a double). Zappa finds himself in the midst of legal storms that prevent him, almost mockingly, from being able to access his personal archive. Despite this, however, Uncle Frank does not give up and manages, after the release of the double LP, to place himself heavily in the hit-parade in hot spots (this had not happened to him for a while). "Sheik Yerbouti' is based on, and lives on, Frank Zappa's ingenious and crazy imagination, capable of contaminating, in an ecstatic way, several musical genres together, from pop to rock, from psychedelia to refined references to classical music. And all through a series of tracks that can be broken down at will, based, above all, on celestial musical notes and lyrics that are never banal or redundant. On this album, too, the sound montage is chilling (Zappa himself would call it 'xenocrony'), while the band, completely renewed, features some musical aces that would have made any songwriter envious: Adrian Belew, the guitarist, Terry Bozzio, the drummer, Tommy Mars, the keyboardist. Much of the material is recorded live, during concerts or during some rehearsal recordings, and the studio-recorded inserts often manage to surpass the live tracks in terms of magic and interpretation."
