"Four years after Nuova Napoli, Nu Genea return with Bar Mediterraneo, a new album and a new journey that takes the sound of the Neapolitan duo formed by Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina even further. Nu Genea's Bar Mediterraneo is an idea of a shared place where people meet and merge; a space that leaves its doors open to travellers and their lives, always exposed to the whims of fate. Some of this can be experienced through the multitude of sounds that come together in the tracks, layers of different acoustic instruments, voices and synthesisers that merge into a unique musical blend. By opening up to the voices of many different people, separated by language but united by the sea and music, Nu Genea's hometown of Naples becomes a real meeting placeIt can be heard throughout. In 'Gelbi', a beautifully deep and propulsive Ney flute plunges into the murky waters of the melancholic Tunisian dialect sung by Marzouk Mejri. In 'Marechia', unbridled happiness and sunshine ooze from Célia Kameni's delicate voice and create an acrobatic bridge between the French and Neapolitan languages. In "Straniero", the soul is arrested by the moment the slow, enchanting mandolin lights up the hypnotic patterns recorded by legendary afrobeat drummer Tony Allen. In 'Bar Mediterraneo', the title track, the bittersweet guitar riffs, analogue waves and choruses overwhelm the song, giving you what you would want to hear on a boat trip along the Amalfi Coast. Nu Genea could not afford to neglect their roots firmly anchored in Neapolitan culture and its dialect with 'Tienaté', where the power of the Neapolitan language (played by Fabiana Martone) supports the quarter-tone strings and the incessant folk-disco groove that extends throughout the song. In 'Praja Magia', repetitive mandolin riffs drive the song, giving way to a choral but tight vocal line that speaks of Varcaturo, a village near Naples. In 'Rire', a deceptively relaxed and lyrical burst of poetic fury, played by Sicilian Marco Castello, combines intimately with a highly musical and multi-textured instrumental framework, with the swooning heart of a chanson. In 'La Crisi', the text of a 1930 poem by Raffaele Viviani has been adapted to a relaxed jazz-funk groove in full NG style. In 'Vesuvio', re-evaluating the evocative verses and powerful mantra of Vesuvius, Nu Genea have adapted a popular song by the working-class group E' Zezi from Pomigliano D'Arco to the dancefloor, combining the voices of a school choir with Jupiter-6 arpeggios and bold percussion. The Bar Mediterraneo is the place to constantly return to in order to transform curiosity into participation, tradition into sharing, the unfamiliar into the familiar. When travellers pass through its 'doors', bringing with them their treasure trove of words and emotions, they are no longer strangers. They participate in a shared experience that enriches themselves and others by leading them on unexpected musical journeys."
