"Tom Waits is one of the greatest rock artists (and not only) bequeathed to us by the 20th century, an opinion shared by almost all users of the devil's music, so much so that it is honestly difficult to find disparagers of the master of Pomona. Why? Because Waits has built up an enviable reputation over a thirty-year career, based on a professional ethic that has never been shaken by commercial temptations or suggestions of divinity, but above all on a series of albums of the highest quality. However, "Swordfishtrombones" retains a special flavour, as it imposes itself as an important breaking point in Waits' career; it marks the clear and irreversible change from a simple, albeit gifted, smoky nightclub jazz cocktail pseudo-crooner to an erudite post-modern composer, capable of conceiving a sort of total music, indebted as much to the masters of American songwriting as to different musical forms, typical of Afro folklore, European and others. The amalgamation of such different sounds has given rise to a series of rhythmic asymmetries, disharmonies and cabaret-like jarring, which, however, have the stigmata of classicism, as classic (in the sense of traditional, by now a shared and decoded heritage) are the musical models that generated the aforementioned sounds..."
