The sound of vinyl can be greatly improved during playback, when unwanted resonances between the recording and the platter can be reduced. 
 
Standard clamps, which use weight to achieve this, have 2 disadvantages:

1) The weight can induce high levels of rumble, when used with low-cost turntables that have less massive platter bearings
2) Instead of crushing the entire LP surface, traditional clamping with rubber mats or other damping materials can achieve the opposite result: Vinyl will get a bowl shape without any contact of the outer edges of the record on the platter.
Both of these disadvantages negatively affect the signal.
 
Locking is the real solution, an accessory with a spindle clamping mechanism, which will not add weight, which would induce rumbling.
The pressure can be precisely adjusted according to the condition of the deformed discs.
