The Kool Jazz Festival in New York featured great talents, including bassist Jaco Pastorius, former member of the band Weather Report, unanimously considered one of the most important bassists in music history. The unmissable re-issue of the album 'Truth, Liberty & Soul' features the performance that Pastorius and the remarkable big band Word of Mouth, featuring harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans, gave on 27 June 1982 at Avery Fisher Hall during the Kool Jazz Festival. The 24 tracks of this extraordinary live album were recorded with strictly analogue technology by the Record Plant Truck mobile studio and are offered on a valuable triple vinyl 200 gr 45 rpm.

'Truth, Liberty & Soul' is an exceptional recording of an exceptional concert: it is in fact the first recording to be mastered from the original 2-track master tapes, found some 30 years after the concert, by René LaFlamme, a true high-end genius. The remastering was done on the Nagra system without any digital manipulation and the strictly analogue lacquer cutting was done by Bernie Grundman on the Bernie Grundman Mastering tube system.

Jaco Pastorius, unanimously regarded as the brightest star in the electric bass firmament, began to make a name for himself among American bass fans in 1976, the year Columbia Records released his audacious eponymous album. Thanks to the extraordinary performance of his fretless electric bass, Pastorius immediately made a huge impression on both audiences and critics. His characteristic style included elements of Latin funk, lyrical solo passages, vigorous bass chords and a very innovative use of harmonics.

With regard to his collaboration with Weather Report and the bands he played with afterwards, Pastorius was able to give a new identity and a completely new role to his instrument, becoming the main standard-bearer of a new performing style in both technical and conceptual terms. His work always included R&B, Latin-influenced grooves and a rock tendency, refined and embedded in sophisticated jazz harmonic structures. In addition to being a virtuoso bass player, Pastorius was also a brilliant composer and arranger, qualities that can be appreciated in all their splendour on this splendid record.

Nominated three times for Grammy Awards, in 1988 Pastorius was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame, an honour reserved for only seven bassists and one electric bassist, him. His influence as a great bass innovator continues to live on today, more than 35 years after his untimely death in 1987.
