"Considered the most critically acclaimed album, Rain Dogs follows the new musical path Waits embarked on with Swordfishtrombones. Considered the central part of a de facto trilogy with Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs is the first Waits album to have been written in New York, in a basement in Lower Manhattan. A 53-minute, 19-track monster, Rain Dogs is a sort of mutant musical 'Canterbury Tales' of the late 20th century, with a shape-shifting band. Personally edited by Tom Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan, Waits' albums released on Island Records between 1983 and 1993 have been remastered from the original tapes and will be reissued on vinyl and CD by Island/Universal Music.
Swordfishtrombones (1983), Waits' revolutionary creative breakthrough, its superb sequel Rain Dogs (1985) and the theatrical musical that completes the trilogy, Franks Wild Years (1987), will kick off the series on 1 September, exactly 40 years after the release of Swordfishtrombones, the album that ushered in a new musical era for Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan, who also became writing and production partners.
All albums were mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering under the guidance of Waits' sound engineer Karl Derfler. The master of Swordfishtrombones comes from the original EQ'ed ½‘ production master while Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years, Bone Machine and The Black Rider come from the original ½’ flat master tapes. Bellman meticulously processed the tapes and then remastered the audio in high resolution 192 kHz/24 bit.
The vinyl cutting for all the albums was done by Alex Abrash. The new VINYL and CD editions with DIGISLEEVE packaging will have specially designed unreleased labels featuring photos of Waits from those years as well as artwork and packaging carefully recreated to replicate the original LPs.’
