Turntable mats have always been a big discussion on how they affect sound. The interaction between the record and the surface can be traced very easily by the supersensitivity of a good pick-up cartridge.
Common felt mats provide a smooth contact between record and disc, but have the disadvantage of static electricity. This means that felt mats often collect a lot of dust that can be transferred into the register. Damping capacity is also very limited, which can be a problem with metal platters. Thick rubber mats overmould the record and have an isolating effect that leaves static on the record and the result is a tolerable noise click.
Leather and Cork are 2 different but very interesting options for improving sound quality. They dampen resonances more effectively than felt, keep dust out and also have sufficient contattivity to avoid static electricity.
Which is better depends on taste and the actual design of the cymbal. A very economical way to improve sound and have less static and dust. You can hear the difference!
