(Atlantic SD 7205) Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles (voc, el-p); King Curtis (ts, ss); Billy Preston (org); Truman Thomas (el-p); Cornell Dupree (g); Jerry Jemmot (b); Bernard Purdie (dr); Pancho Morales (cga) - Recorded live in February 1975 at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, by Ray Thompson. Produced by Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin. Live recordings can be very different: most are discarded, some find their way onto the market as bootlegs, and only a very few manage to retain the authentic spirit and sheer enthusiasm of the live concert that they stopped in time. "Live at Fillmore West" is one of these special live recordings that captured the concert the great Aretha Franklin gave at Fillmore West, the legendary San Francisco concert hall that closed shortly after this extraordinary event. For this performance, Aretha Franklin chose not to perform with her usual band that had stayed in Detroit, but with King Curtis And The Kingpins, one of the most interesting line-ups around, and she also wanted pioneering musicians Cornel Dupree on guitar and Bernard Purdie on drums on stage. Once the needle rests on the record the show is assured. In the background you can hear the high-pitched sounds of the Memphis Horns, a fantastic brass section, while Billy Preston's fingers move over the organ creating an aura of pure spiritual energy. At one point in the evening, something extraordinary happens: Ray Charles, accidentally sitting in the audience, comes on stage and intervenes in the song 'Spirit In The Dark'. As for her, the absolute star of the evening, there is nothing to say: words are not enough to describe her talent, you just have to listen to her. Without the superb albums of the late 1960s, Aretha Franklin would never have become the first soul sister of the United States, nor would she have appeared at the Fillmore West. 'Live at Fillmore West' is truly an extraordinary document and a fine record that deserves a place of honour in any collection.
