(Columbia JC 35277) Al Di Meola (g); Barry Miles (keyb); Anthony Jackson (b); Steve Gadd (dr); Mingo Lewis (cga); Eddie Colon (perc) - Recorded May-September 1977 at Electric Lady Studios, New York, by Dave Palme. Produced by Al Di Meola. Having archived the incredible manual dexterity demonstrated in 'Elegant Gypsy', string master Al Di Meola decided to devote himself to 'Casino', an album in which the musician tackles particularly challenging musical material. The album's track list includes, for instance, 'Egyptian Danza', a complex amalgam of circular melodies that, with a light electronic touch, evokes the contrasting universes of East, West and New World. In "Chasin' The Voodoo", the sound becomes denser and rises to become a continuous fire that feeds on the sounds of the master's guitar. Di Meola combines the idea of multiple rhythms: in "Fantasia Suite for Two Guitars", four miniatures with percussive zapateado rhythm and flamenco sounds, the guitarist accompanies himself thanks to the multi-track. But the best comes at the end: in the closing track, 'Casino', all forces come together to create a breathtaking spectacle of different tempos, overlapping patterns, clever metric changes and, of course, characterised by the inimitable sound of Al Di Meola's guitar.
