"There is nothing on this LP that is as catchy as Roxanne, with its giggles and pop harmonies in the chorus, but almost all the compositions on the album will still stick in your head. Building and repeating rhythmic, sparse melodies, Sting, Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers invent patterns and create opposing currents as if they were bodybuilders working out side by side.
Songs, no matter if reggae or rock, almost never have an ending. On the contrary, they build up refrains, change tempo and then fade out. Each one is perfected by a distinct production or arrangement trick: the phaser-effected vocals in No Time This Time, the Bob Dylan-esque rhythmic lyrics of Subterranean Homesick Blues in It's Alright With You, the structure of The Who's Magic Bus tucked into Deathwish. The Bed's Too Big Without You's evocative reggae combines Sting's dry, howling syllables with Summers' buzzing guitar shenanigans to create a refrain that's impossible not to sing along to."
