(Columbia CS 9913) Janis Joplin (voc); Cornelius 'Snooky' Flowers, Terry Clements (sax); Luis Gasca (tr); Richard Kermode, Gabriel Mekler (org); Sam Andrew (g); Brad Campbell (b); Maury Baker, Lonnie Castille (dr) - Recorded in June 1969 by Sy Mitchell, Jerry Hochman and Alex Kazanegras. Produced by Gabriel Mekler. When Janis Joplin died in October 1970 at only 27 years of age, making the Beat Generation motto 'live fast, love hard, die young' her own, she was immediately crowned 'the queen of rock', but even in her lifetime she was loved and acclaimed for her explosive vocal style. Janis Joplin's discography is as short and changeable as her life was. After two LPs recorded with the musicians of the band Big Brother And The Holding Company, thanks to which the singer obtained her first record contract with Columbia Records in 1968, the American label got her a larger group that also included an organ and some wind instruments. The record company's intention was to expand the artist's vocal expression with blues and funk elements, which, however, her most loyal fans and some critics saw as a betrayal of rock ideals. European rock fans, on the other hand, were less critical, especially since Joplin and his Kozmic Blues Band toured the Old Continent for two months. At the time of its release, 'I Got Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!' was a much-discussed album precisely because of Joplin and his record company's artistic choice to open up to sophisticated soul and blues sounds. The end result is a record that chronicles the development of Janis Joplin's career, an album that reached the Top 5 of the Billboard charts and within a month became a gold record with 500,000 copies sold.
