(RCA LSP 4102) Nina Simone (p, voc) - Recorded in 1969 at RCA Victor's Studio B, New York City, by Ray Hall. Produced by Stroud Productions, Inc. Musicians certainly don't have it easy with record companies. Early in their careers they struggle to get their first contract and then, when the debut brings the hoped-for success, their voices pass through the hands of various arrangers. Once through all the various stations involving collaborations with various combos, big bands and orchestras, the artists usually ask for the chance to perform solo. "And Piano!" is the album that proves that Nina Simone did not need outside help to bring her emotional and expressive singing style to the fore. The piano, which Simone plays excellently, is the only accompanist that accompanies the artist's voice in these beautiful songs about loneliness, identity crisis and melancholy. The piano parts are much more than mere background music: depending on the piece and the atmosphere, the instrument's melodies vary from bluesy tones to late romantic flare to avant-garde aggression. Yet the very different pieces have one thing in common: full of bizarre beauty, they are a touching portrait of the many facets of the human personality.
