(Arista AL 4066) Patti Smith (g,voc); Richard Sohl (p); Lenny Kaye (b, g, voc); Tom Verlaine, Allen Lanier (g); Ivan Kral (b, g, keyb, voc); Jay Dee Daugherty (dr) - Recorded in January 1975 at Electric Ladyland Studios, New York City, by Bernie Kirsh. Produced by John Cale. Patti Smith has been called by the New York Times 'the first published poet to transpose her poetry into rock'n'roll, drawing experimental rock fans into the forbidden cinema of her hallucinated fantasy'. The artist began her career unconventionally, with guitarist Lenny Kaye accompanying her poetry readings and the great photographer Robert Mapplethorpe financing her cult punk-rock single 'Hey Joe'. In 1975, Smith released his debut album, 'Horses', an album of rock riffs and spoken-word rhythms that created a punk-trash sound. The music scene was electrified by the project and Creem magazine described it as the 'best garage sound of the 1970s', speculating that Patti Smith had been inspired by Rimbaud, Burroughs, Dylan and the Velvet Underground. The artist's later productions were dismissed as sentimental and full of self-censorship, as the rock poetess had stopped using the metallic harshness and raw language that characterised her debut album. This is why 'Horses' is considered by many to be a milestone in rock history, ranking 44th on Rolling Stone magazine's '500 greatest albums of all times' list, and why it is certainly a unique piece within the burgeoning discography of the rock'n'roll visionary.
