"One can see in Antipop the latest contribution of Brian 'Brain' Mantia, a drummer in his third extensive collaboration, made Antipop angrier, though not without the traditional Primus sense of humour, but more metal in the traditional sense. Weighed down on these 13 tracks is the style of some guest stars and a musical production geared towards a radio audience, a child of the 90s and nu metal. In fact, the three tracks written with the collaboration of Tom Morello, undoubtedly come close to the style of Rage Against The Machine (which they cannot achieve without vocalist Zac de la Rocha...), while Tom Waits' contribution on lyrics and mellotron bears his bitter and dark signature. Even Les Claypool takes care to contain the exuberance of his bass, as if locked in an anti-material cage that he sometimes opens to unleash in micro solos, see Natural Joe. On the other hand, this album has a very powerful and 'live' sound, despite having been recorded in the studio and undoubtedly in separate rooms, this star team has achieved a compact sound, the tracks have no favouritism and each guest is at ease with the rest of the band. Morello does himself credit with his solos and guitar on Electric Uncle Sam and as always Tom Waits' lyrics are sick and intriguing. Claypool plays a special bass specially prepared for him by master luthier Carl Thompson, the AntiMatter bass."
