(Columbia OS 3180) Paul Simon (g, voc); Art Garfunkel (voc), Dave Grusin, a.o. - With his film 'The Graduate', which was awarded an Oscar and five Golden Globes, director Mike Nichols created much more than the erotic initiation story of the newly graduated Benjamin. Not only the script, but also the production methods of the project were truly revolutionary. For the first time ever, the encrusted morality of American high society was attacked by a film, an Alfa Romeo was effectively advertised and never before had a soundtrack been created using hit pop songs. About the music of 'The Graduate' there is not much to say: songs like 'Sounds of Silence', 'Mrs Robinson' and 'Scarborough Fair' have entered the annals of musical culture since they were used in Nichols' film. Listening to the disc offered by Speakers Corner, it is surprising to note how perfectly the various pieces fit the context of the film, just as if they had been written for the various scenes. Certainly, this soundtrack helped the artistic rise of Dustin Hoffman who was playing his first big role at the time, but above all, it was a real launching pad for Simon & Garfunkel who were catapulted to the top of the list of the world's best ballad singers. Listening to 'The Graduate' it is also interesting to note Dave Grusin's great musical ability which, after all the hype generated by this provocative film, has unfortunately fallen into the background. "The Graduate" is an unmissable opportunity to rediscover a great film and a duo that has received numerous Grammy Awards and has been mentioned in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
