(Columbia KC 32017) Eric Bloom (voc, keyb, g); Allen Lanier (keyb, g); Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser (g, voc); Joe Bouchard (b, voc, keyb); Albert Bouchard (dr, voc) - Recorded in 1972 at Columbia Studios, New York City, by Tim Geelan. Produced by Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman. "Tyranny and Mutation" takes us nostalgically back in time, to when DJs presented their products on radio stations that were followed at the same time by normal listeners and music pirates. At that time, Blue Öyster Cult, a rock band with a somewhat progressive and somewhat psychedelic character, led a niche existence that makes their records, especially the first ones, even more appealing today. The rediscovery of this band had already been initiated by the Columbia label with the re-release of the album 'Secret Treaties', which was followed by 'Tyranny and Mutation'. Although the band offers a softer mix of tracks on the second album, the opening track 'The Red & The Back' makes it clear that one is nevertheless about to embark on a whirlwind rollercoaster ride. Further on in the listening, the straightforward guitar riffs merge with a complex melody, giving rise to the colourful sound of "O.D. 'd Life Itself", the naive yet articulate rock of "Baby Ice Dog", and rising to the heights of "Wings Wetted Down" with its splendid polyphonic male parts. 'Tyranny and Mutation' is a record just waiting for a DJ to decide to put it on his turntable!
