(Sony SOP 1213) Wayne Shorter (ss, ts); Joe Zawinul (p, el-p); Miroslav Vitous (b, el-b); Eric Gravatt (dr); Don Um Romao (perc). Recorded in January 1972 at the Shibuya Philharmonic Hall, Tokyo, by Susumu Satoh. Produced by Kiyoshi Itoh. Do you remember what you did on the evening of 13 January 1972? Many Japanese jazz lovers that evening went to the great Shibuya Public Hall in Tokyo to attend the concert of the legendary Weather Report, an event that is now considered a true milestone in jazz history. The technicians from Columbia's Japanese subsidiary, Sony, carefully set up their microphones and recorders and immortalised this memorable live concert, which is now being reissued by Speakers Corner in the double vinyl 'Weather Report Live in Tokyo'. Two of the tracks on the album had already been recorded in New York with the same group of musicians for the album 'I Sing The Body Electric', but the experience of hearing this excellent ensemble live was only granted to privileged Japanese fans. The concert programme consisted of long medleys composed by Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul: the two artists took their pieces apart and then recomposed them through the interaction of rhythm group and soloists. Among the most recognisable works on the tracklists are certainly 'Doctor Honoris Causa' and 'Directions'. For their outstanding work, Shorter and Zawinul were rewarded by the audience with a long and intense applause. For the many listeners who were unable to attend the Japanese live concert, 'Weather Report Live in Tokyo' is a truly unmissable double album with superb sound quality.
