Dust is abrasive and, due to the pressure exerted on the record surface by the cartridge, which causes friction and heat, can permanently damage the groove.
The Pro-Ject brush has over a million conductive carbon fibres. They are so microscopic that they enter the grooves and their electrical conductivity allows them to drain the electrostatic charge present in the record. There is no grounding because there is no need: the electrostatic charge, being high voltage and low amperage, is easily dissipated on contact with the body of its user. The Pro-Ject anti-static brush does absolutely no damage to your vinyl records.
