(CTI 6002) Antonio Carlos Jobim (p, el-p, v, voc, g); Joe Farrell (ss); Urbie Green (tb); Hubert Laws (fl); Eumir Deodato (g, arr, cond); Harry Lookofsky (v); Ron Carter (b); Airto Moreira, Everaldo Ferreira (perc); Joao Palma (dr) - Recorded in June 1970 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, USA. Produced by Creed Taylor. Around 1970, it seemed that everything possible had been said about the mix of samba and cool jazz that had become so popular in the last two decades. Many adventurous musicians such as Luis Bonfa, Baden Powell, Charly Byrd, Joao and Astrud Gilberto, the saxophonist Stan Getz and even Antonio Carlos Jobim made fundamental contributions to the development of this musical style. The catchy melodies of 'Desafinado' and 'One Note Samba', penned by Jobim and Newton Mendonca, were enthusiastically listened to all over the world. That the man from Ipanema still had a lot to say is proven by the album 'Stone Flower', which presents the artist's creativity at the highest point of his maturity. Already from the opening track, 'Tereza My Love', with Urbie Green on trombone playing the piece so purely in the upper register, it is clear that the late bossa is structurally much more refined than the hot dance of the early period. The melodies seem interwoven with shimmering threads of gold and silver rhythm and the clusters of notes are light and airy. However, here and there, the musicians let loose as in the Latin classic 'Brazil'. With that wizard of sound that is Eumir Deodato as arranger and conductor and Rudy Van Gelder as sound engineer, 'Stone Flower' is certainly a bossa nova masterpiece.
