‘‘Space Oddity’ was, and is, a revolutionary, rock, psychedelic, evocative record with key elements of what would later become David Bowie's musical identity. A dominant perceived folk influence, coming from Bob Dylan, but an obsessive passion for progressive rock led him to request, for the creation of this record, the participation of figures such as Paul Buckmaster, Pentangle drummer Terry Cox and Rick Wakeman, a session player at the time and future member of Strawbs and Yes. In ‘Space Oddity’, Major Tom leaves for space and never returns to earth, a bit like David Bowie who, discovering his true nature, will aspire to reach and contemplate ever higher peaks. Beyond the sun and the stars, towards Space.’
