"John Lennon's first solo album is a powerful, visceral, honest record. Vulnerable and liberating at the same time. And, for John's personal journey, epochal. It is a break with the past, a U-turn, leaving behind - even resentfully - his ten years in the most popular band on the planet. It is the moment when he strips himself of his identity so far, and together with Yoko Ono goes in search of himself. He strips away all superstructures and the Beatlesian mythological halo, and decides - consciously - to take a plunge into the unconscious, to discover who he really is. He does this in music, with a bare, essential record, no frills, no embellishments required if the truth is to be shouted out. 10 songs +1 where anxiety and pain are cathartic and in some moments the immersion is so intense that it sends long shivers down your spine and takes your breath away. A record of the old-fashioned kind, which required immersion in order to grasp its full essence and, once you got into it, it would numb you for days. A record that is not necessarily easy or pleasant to listen to, but one that goes into the category of fundamental records in terms of symbolic and artistic value. "It's the best thing I've done. I used to write about me only once in a while, now I only write about me'. That's what the album is: an intense, sometimes dramatic, psychotherapeutic session, to get rid of inner demons, of the traumas that our bodies carry as memories, soothe the wounds with a little love, and be reborn."
