"The tracks on 'Chet Baker & Crew' were recorded in the last week of July 1956 at the Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, when Baker and his band had just finished a long European tour. Together with Baker (trumpet, vocals) on stage are Bobby Timmons on piano, Phil Urso on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Bond on bass, Peter Littman on drums and, on the tracks 'To Mickey's Memory' and 'Pawnee Junction' Bill Loughbrough on timpani, who lends these West Coast bop tunes some interesting Polynesian suggestions. The band members take full advantage of their individual skills as soloists to extend the life of pieces like "Slightly Above Moderate" and "Halema", the latter composed by Phil Urso and named after Baker's wife. The extraordinary chemistry that exists between Urso and Baker reaches its peak in the interaction the two artists have in 'Worryin' the Life Out of Me'. Bobby Timmons also makes an essential contribution, characterising the blues pieces 'Lucius Lu' and 'Line for Lyons' with his playful and lively style. The last of the two tracks is particularly interesting as it is the only track where Baker's voice can be heard. "Chet Baker & Crew is a record that everyone should have in their jazz collection!"
